Rife
W/ Fire
16mm film, 8 minutes, optical sound
In 1994 I began
documenting Stephen Rife's pyrotechnic demonstrations. From
the first non-dairy-creamer explosion to projectiles of burning steel
wool and the most recent experiments with flaming parafin &
water, I have known that Rife's work demands consideration. The medium
of fire lends itself magnificently to the medium
of film. They share rudimentary principles of light and movement.
Importat
also is the caress of the flame on the emulsion.
