German industrial Philanthropy University of Michigan Digital Music Ensemble plays at the site of Bastiaan Maris Chemo-Acoustic Beat Generators

Are you anticipating anything different about this performance-- how will the dynamic change as a result of the location?

Alex Ruthman: We hope we don't drive away Bastiaan's audience before his piece starts. (laugh) It'll be different here because we get a lot of reverb and bouncing back. It should be cool.

Chris Peck: I think the fire organ is a big draw, so maybe we'll get a different audience. We've kind of been on the outskirts of the festival.

Steve Rush

How do you feel before the performance?

Steve Rush: Very nervous. Not on purpose, but I think that if you're not nervous before a performance it's probably a good sign to quit. (laugh) I always get tense. I like to just call it excited. It's probably nervous & excited. I'm really excited. I'm jazzed.

Can you tell me how this performance might differ from the others?

Steve: Context. We might be concentrating a little harder-- sort of all or nothing at all. It's the last show of the tour. (laugh) But I think it's mostly about context at this point. Chris said this is like performing on Mars, with the rockets & the red dirt & whatnot... kind of an outerspace thing.

Is that why you wore your green sneakers?

Steve: Exactly, I am a Martian on Mars.

post performance:

How was it?

Steve: Oh, it was good for me.

Feel good?

Steve: It was very interesting.

Interesting how?

Steve: I think it worked well, actually, but I don't want to tell you everything.

Tell me everything. Come on...

Steve: Allright I'll tell you. The last 4 pages were completely upside down.

Chris: Could have been part of the composition.

Steve: Oh, might have been a gift. I'd have to ask these guys, but it took very little to start playing the piece upside down.

Alex: Oh no, not a problem.

Chris: I was surprised!

So were you actually playing it upside down, or reading it upside down?

Steve: From the bottom up-- sort of Chinese.

Chris: I thought that was the best we played.

Steve: Oh yeah, oh yeah.

How do you guys feel?

Chris: We came through adversity together & succeeded.

Alex: Now we're ready to hear the organ.

It seems like people were fairly perplexed, yet enjoying themselves.

Alex: Yeah, we got a good crowd response. I was surprised.

Chris: What I noticed was that the children completely got it.

Steve: This is very good. I'm feeling better about the performance.

Better since when?

Steve: Since I quit playing. It's what happens-- cycles are very strange, very funny. It's kind of interesting to talk about it.
